Thailand Offers Financial Aid, Visa Relief and Hotel Discounts to Stranded Tourists
Thailand has introduced emergency support measures for foreign tourists stranded in the country after widespread flight cancellations caused by escalating conflict in the Middle East. The disruption has affected key air routes between the Middle East and Southeast Asia, leaving many travellers unable to return home.
Why Flights Were Cancelled
Airspace closures and safety concerns in parts of the Middle East forced airlines to suspend or reroute flights. Because major Gulf hubs serve as key transit points for travel to Thailand, cancellations quickly impacted airports across the country.
Airports affected include:
- Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok)
- Don Mueang International Airport (Bangkok)
- Phuket International Airport
- Chiang Mai International Airport
Both arriving and departing passengers have been affected. Some tourists were unable to begin their trips to Thailand, while others already in the country found themselves stuck after return flights were cancelled.
฿2,000 Per Day Financial Support
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is providing financial assistance to eligible stranded tourists.
- ฿2,000 per person per day
- Maximum payout capped at ฿20,000 per person
- Applies to travellers unable to leave due to flight cancellations linked to airspace closures
The support is intended to help cover accommodation and living costs during unexpected extended stays.
Visa Relief and Overstay Waivers
Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has announced temporary relief measures for affected visitors.
- No overstay fines for genuine tourists stranded by cancelled flights
- Administrative penalties related to overstays are waived
- 30-day visa extensions available with supporting documents from embassies
Officials say tourists will not be penalised if delays are clearly linked to the aviation disruption.
Hotel Discounts and Flexible Policies
The government is working with hotel associations and tourism operators to reduce costs for stranded visitors.
- Discounted room rates
- Special long-stay pricing
- Waived rebooking and cancellation fees
- Discounted domestic travel packages where available
Provincial tourism offices have been instructed to coordinate directly with hotels and provide updated travel information to affected guests.
Ongoing Monitoring
Authorities have set up crisis coordination teams to monitor flight schedules and provide support at airports and major tourist areas. Airlines continue to adjust routes as the situation develops.
Officials say the measures aim to reduce financial stress for visitors and protect Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming travel destination while the aviation situation stabilises.
