🚆 Bangkok’s Red Line Is Expanding — Big Time!
🇹🇭 Thailand is moving ahead with major Red Line commuter rail extensions, injecting 💰 billions of baht into rail infrastructure under the M-MAP2 transport master plan. Contracts are expected to be signed 📄 by February 2026, with construction starting 🏗️ in March 2026 and train services launching 🚉 in March 2029.
🗺️ What Is M-MAP2?
M-MAP2 is Phase 2 of Bangkok’s Mass Rapid Transit Master Plan, designed to expand rail coverage 🚄 across Bangkok and nearby areas. The Red Line projects fall under Group A1, meaning they are ✅ ready to proceed immediately.
💸 Investment Overview
In 2026, the Red Line extensions are expected to become a flagship project 🚩 of the Ministry of Transport, generating more than 💵 20 billion baht in rail investment.
📦 Red Line Projects Included
The overall package includes three major components: the Rangsit–Thammasat University extension 🎓, the Siriraj–Taling Chan–Salaya extension 🏥🏙️, and the planned “Missing Link” sections 🔗 connecting central Bangkok routes.
🎓 Rangsit – Thammasat University Extension
This 8.84-kilometre extension has a budget of 💰 6.473 billion baht and runs through Mueang Pathum Thani, Thanyaburi, and Khlong Luang districts in Pathum Thani province. It will serve 🚉 five stations: Rangsit, Khlong Nueng, Bangkok University, Chiang Rak, and Thammasat Rangsit.
🏥 Siriraj – Taling Chan – Salaya Extension
The 20.5-kilometre western extension has a budget of 💰 15.176 billion baht. It extends westward ⬅️ from Taling Chan Station to Salaya Station, with an additional alignment to Siriraj. The eight stations are Siriraj, Charan Sanitwong, Taling Chan Floating Market, Taling Chan, Ban Chimphli, Kanchanaphisek, Sala Thammasop, and Salaya.
🔗 Missing Link Red Line Projects
Future plans include the Light Red Line from Bang Sue to Phaya Thai, Makkasan, and Hua Mak 🚦, and the Dark Red Line from Bang Sue to Hua Lamphong. Together, these sections cover 25.9 kilometres with a combined budget of 💵 34.95 billion baht.
⏱️ Project Timeline
The State Railway of Thailand 🚆 listed both Red Line extension projects for electronic bidding 💻 on December 29, 2025. Winning bidders are expected to be announced 🏆 by February 2026, with a Notice to Proceed issued in March 2026. Construction will take 🏗️ 36 months, with completion targeted for February 2029 and service beginning 🚉 in March 2029.
