Thailand on Flash Flood Alert: 29 Provinces Told to Prepare 🌧️⚠️

Thailand’s disaster officials are sounding the alarm as heavy rain and possible flash floods threaten 29 provinces from May 8–10.

The warning covers parts of the North, North-East, and South, with emergency teams now watching rivers, flood zones, and weather conditions 24/7.

What’s Causing the Extreme Weather?

A powerful cold air system from China is colliding with warm, moisture-filled winds from the Gulf of Thailand — creating the perfect conditions for intense storms and sudden downpours.

In southern Thailand, strengthening easterly winds are expected to increase the risk of:

  • Flash floods
  • Forest run-off
  • Sudden water surges in low-lying areas
  • Areas on High Alert 🚨

    Northern Thailand (15 Provinces)

    Including:

  • Chiang Mai
  • Chiang Rai
  • Mae Hong Son
  • North-Eastern Thailand (2 Provinces)

  • Loei
  • Chaiyaphum
  • Southern Thailand (12 Provinces)

    Including:

  • Phuket
  • Krabi
  • Surat Thani
  • Officials Say: Be Ready, Not Sorry

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is urging residents to stay alert and prepare now before conditions worsen.

    👜 Pack a “Grab Bag”

Keep essentials ready in case you need to leave quickly:

  • Drinking water
  • Medicine
  • Snacks and dry food
  • Important documents in waterproof bags
  • Phone chargers and flashlights
  • ⚡ Stay Safe Around Electricity

    If flooding starts:

  • Turn off your home’s main electricity switch
  • Avoid touching wet electrical appliances
  • Stay far away from submerged power lines
  • 🌊 Watch for Nature’s Warning Signs

    Danger signs include:

  • Fast-rising water
  • Muddy or discoloured streams
  • Heavy rain continuing for hours
  • 🧹 Clear Drains Before the Rain Hits

Officials are asking communities to remove mud, leaves, and rubbish from drains and flood barriers to help water flow properly.

📱 Evacuation Orders Could Come by SMS

Authorities say people should follow evacuation messages immediately if alerts are sent through Thailand’s SMS or Cell Broadcast systems.

  • Move to higher ground
  • Relocate vehicles and livestock
  • Follow directions from local officials
  • Emergency hotline 1784 is available 24 hours a day for assistance.
