Thai Flag Soars Over Antarctica in Record-Breaking Skydive
Thailand’s flag has reached one of the coldest and most extreme places on Earth, thanks to a fearless doctor with a passion for skydiving. Dr Thanaborworn Sirikunakornkul, better known as “Super Tum,” has made history by completing a high-altitude skydive over Antarctica while carrying a giant Thai flag, earning a Guinness World Record.
A Leap Like No Other
The record-breaking jump took place near the South Pole, where freezing temperatures and powerful winds make skydiving especially dangerous. Dr Thanaborworn performed a HALO jump, short for High Altitude, Low Opening, meaning he leapt from an extreme height and opened his parachute close to the ground. This advanced technique requires special training, supplemental oxygen, and precise timing, and is commonly used in military operations. Dr Thanaborworn is Thailand’s first HALO-certified skydiver.
Not His First Time Flying the Flag
Antarctica isn’t the first extreme location where Super Tum has carried the Thai flag through the skies. He has previously completed similar skydives over Mount Everest and Scandinavia. The Antarctic mission marks his third major flag-carrying skydive and his most challenging feat so far.
A Tribute from the Sky
This daring jump was more than a record attempt. Dr Thanaborworn dedicated the mission to fallen Thai soldiers, honoring those who lost their lives in recent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border. As of December 2025, at least 21 Thai soldiers have been reported killed. Images released by Thailand’s Public Relations Department show him descending with the Thai flag against Antarctica’s frozen landscape.
Official Recognition with More to Come
Thai authorities have confirmed the achievement as a Guinness World Record, although the Guinness World Records organization has not yet published the full entry. Beyond his skydiving feats, Dr Thanaborworn is also an associate professor, known for balancing academic work with extreme sports and pushing the limits of what is possible.
